Your Fiamma Awning Headquarters

You can nearly double your functional space and enjoy the outdoors even more just by adding a quality RV awning to your campervan!

An awning not only adds a covered outdoor living space, it also shades your doorway to keep direct sunlight from heating up the inside of your van. This is especially important if you plan to install solar panels on your van roof, and will be parked in the sun often. Keep the door open and let the awning do the hard work of reflecting away the intense sun, or simply relax outside in the shade of your new front porch.

Take a look at the Fiamma awnings we offer below for more details and visit the links to shop!

Fiamma Awning Types

The best type of RV awning for camper vans is the box awning, also called a "case awning" or "cassette awning." They typically range from 8'-14’ long, as best fits the length of your van and the area you want to shade.

With a box awning, a sturdy fabric shade mounted to a metal frame rolls out of a metal case using either a manual crank or an electric motor. The shade cloth connects to a lead rail, where some RV awnings (like Fiamma F45S and F80S) have an arm structure under the cloth and support legs that fold out from the lead rail. The support legs can mount into clips on the lower body of your camper van, or you can extend them to the ground and even stake them down for additional stability. Note that RV awnings should be retracted in high winds or heavy rain, snow or hail to avoid damage.

Legless awnings —— such as the Fiamma F65 Eagle and F45 Eagle — are supported by scissor arms in the awning canopy and do not require additional leg supports. Fiamma Eagle awnings also include wind sensor technology that will automatically close the awning in unsafe conditions, so you won't have to worry when the wind picks up.

How do you mount an RV awning?

Like with so many van build questions, it depends! To start, what kind of van do you have? With what wheelbase and roof height? If you have a:

Mercedes Sprinter campervan - For roof mount: grab a ladder to check if you have roof rails (metal tracks on the roof). Your Sprinter will either have factory-installed roof rails or factory mounting inserts. You can mount the awning directly to the roof rails or to the factory mounting points using a specific adapter, or if you have a roof rack, you can install an awning on the side of the rack.

For wall mount - To install wall mount brackets, you'll need to pre-drill the bracket holes using the bracket as a template, placing the adapter bracket in the flattest upper portion of your van wall. Depending on the awning and your van type, you may need a specific bracket to complete installation.

Ford Transit campervan — For roof mount, you can use the fixed mount points on the roof of your van, under round plugs which protect the threaded holes for the mount points. You’ll have 6 mount points for the 130”WB, 8 for the 148”WB, and 10 for the 148”WB EL van. You can attach your awning to a roof rack using a specific adapter or directly onto your roof using your factory mount points and compatible adapter.

Ram ProMaster campervan - For roof mount, you can use the fixed mount points on the roof of your van. These mount points are under round plugs which protect the threaded holes for the mount points. There are 6 mount points for the 136”WB, 8 for the 159”WB, and 10 for the 159” extended-length van. • Perfect Closing: The Auto-Lock safety system ensures fast and silent opening and closing, and the Dual Security device ensures perfect closing every time.
  • Presto-Fix: The adjusting system enables you to gauge the closing of the lead bar to guarantee a perfect closing over time.

Which Fiamma RV awning model should you choose?

Let’s talk about RV awning wall-mount brackets versus roof-mount brackets. Mounting an RV awning differs by the type of van you’re mounting it on.

  1. The F45S comes standard with wall-mount brackets, great for mounting on a roof rack or on a van with flat vertical sides (no standard Fiamma brackets mount an F45S awning directly to the roof of your van, so you need a roof rack, or you can fabricate your own custom brackets). Available in manual or motorized options
  2. The F45 Eagle is the perfect length for motorhome vehicles, comes motorized with a wall mount switch and self-supporting “eagle” style scissor arms. This awning comes with a wall-mount bracket (Fiamma 98655-505), so it can be mounted on a vertical surface on your RV. This awning is not designed to mount to the side of a roof rack
  3. The roof-mounting F80S will install directly onto the factory threaded bolts or roof rails so it's ideal for camper vans without roof racks. This model doesn’t come with brackets. See our F80S information above to see which bracket option will suit your Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit or Ram ProMaster camper van. Available in manual, motorized with wall switch, motorized with remote control or motorized by smartphone
  4. The F65 Eagle has self-supporting scissor arms that extend the awning without legs. This awning is motorized and includes a wall-mounted switch and automatic roll up wind sensor technology. This awning is a roof-mounted awning, and bracket information is specific for each van.
